The Chicago Conference on Human Rights is a one-day conference on 4 October 2008, inspired by the September 2008 United Nations NGO conference “Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights” at UNESCO, Paris, honoring the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the participation of Chicago NGOs at the United Nations Hearing on United States Compliance with the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) that took place in February 2008 at Geneva, Switzerland.


Join your fellow students from

-- Columbia College Chicago
-- DePaul University
-- Harold Washington College
-- Roosevelt University

to discuss the pressing issues of human rights in Chicago and study how universities and nonprofit organizations are making international connections to empower their local work with the people in Chicago and with the City of Chicago government.

This conference will discuss the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Chicago Shadow Report on racism in Chicago. It will explore five major issues:


-- Criminal Justice and Racial Discrimination
-- Indigenous Issues, Immigration and Human Rights
-- Poverty and Inequality: A Human Rights Issue
-- Teaching about Human Rights
-- The Importance of Human Rights

Speakers will be:

-- Students working on human rights projects
-- Professors engaged in human rights
-- People working in nonprofit organizations on Chicago human rights issues
-- Representatives from the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations
